Chapter Fourteen: Some Honeymoon (Jill)

We had finally found a safe place to cross the river and then had ridden non-stop for six hours. I glanced back at Jane and saw she was struggling. I had given her my riding jacket to cover herself, Romeo still had just a small bit of cloth remaining that did little to cover his private parts. I didn't mind at all. My unicorn was near exhaustion and my thighs were screaming in pain when I decided to call a halt. We had been on a gradual upslope for the last three hours. I could tell were getting close, the trees of the forest were less numerous and the ground had become rocky.

Jane basically collapsed where she was standing and was out of it in a matter of seconds. Romeo asked me if I could stay awake long enough for him to hunt and I just nodded at him. “Make it quick,” I pleaded. We were all hungry but mostly tired. my unicorn had only grazed for a few minutes before he was asleep on his feet.

He returned after just a few minutes with some type of gazelle like creature. “Very fast,” he told me. “Great fun to chase down.”

I gathered some wood together while Romeo prepared the animal. Starting a small fire with just a spark of magic I soon had a feast, more than I could possibly eat because nobody else here would eat it. “Did you eat,” I asked him.

“Yes,” he replied. “Drank two more down first. I will bring one for Jane when she wakes. I'll take the first watch.”

Of course he would I thought as I passed out.

It seemed I had just gone to sleep when Romeo was shaking me awake. “Somethings coming,” he said. “I can feel it in the ground and I can hear something coming from the distance.”

I rose and went to the unicorn, even I could sense a vibration in the ground. Waking him, he shook his head about and then pointed his horn to the air, lowering it to me after a few minutes. “It's the Frenzy,” he told me. “A rare migration. Three legs, four arms, many razor sharp teeth, they will stampede for no apparent reason when feeling the need to move. They will eat any animal in their way, swarming over them and stripping them of flesh in seconds. One of my daughters ahead of us barely got out of the way in time and has been trying to get my attention. She said the herd is twenty miles wide and five miles deep, a big one. We are right in the middle of their path with no time to avoid them. Even your vampires will be overwhelmed. Our only chance is to find shelter underground and hope they pass by without noticing us. My daughter estimates we only have ten minutes before they arrive.”

I looked around, no time to find a hole or dig a hole. I would have to use another ring.
